Tea in the United States covers everything from a traditional Chinese or Japanese tea house to a Southern sweet-tea counter, and the fastest-growing segment is bubble tea: Taiwanese-style milk teas and fruit teas with tapioca pearls, sold by chains and independents alike with adjustable sugar and ice levels. Tea rooms serving afternoon tea with scones and sandwiches usually require a reservation, while boba shops, juice bars and smoothie shops are walk-in and quick. Kava and kombucha bars are a newer category, and loose-leaf tea stores sell blends, teaware and gifts, often with a tasting counter. Prices for a drink run similar to coffee-shop prices, with premium teas and cold-pressed juices at the high end.

Han Cha at the Stony Island Arts Bank is a newer high tea spot in Chicago, and I think some of the mixed reviews are being a little harsh. We went here for an early birthday celebration, and I was pleased. The common complaint is value for the money, and I want to contest that. This is essentially a tasting menu, a hybrid of tasting menu and high tea. You get less food than a traditional high tea, but the tea is on par with other places and the food is higher quality. Everything felt well thought out and genuinely seasonal. Most high tea desserts in Chicago are one note and too sweet, and these were not. The Ottogi curry pimento cheese sandwich was a standout. I'm going to mix curry powder into my pimento cheese next time. The cannelΓ© was also perfection, and I'm a huge cannelΓ© person. They gave it a contemporary spin without losing the original flavor. I also got an extra dessert and a complimentary matcha for my birthday, and as a matcha snob after living in Asia, I enjoyed it. The space is beautiful and clean, intimate without being too close to other tables. You can wander the museum and check out the art beforehand. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable, and the dishwa

We were super excited to come check out this concept, but pretty disappointed by the service and value. Portions were incredibly small, even for tea. While the flavors were delicious and the teas were awesome, each course took nearly an hour for foods that were likely pre-made. We had to wait about 30-45 mins for our check, despite asking several times. Beautiful space, gorgeous ceramics and fun idea for the community, but this missed the mark for us sadly.

I can’t say it’s worth $75/person (that’s before tax and tip). This is the most comically small high tea portion I have ever been given. You get about half a cup of tea for each of the three courses. We were giggling pretty hard every time they put something down. Especially the sandwiches. Two 1/8 sandwiches per person with a thin smear of egg and pimento. That plate in the photo is SMALL don’t be fooled. One more ick is that they do that thing where they ask you if you want sparkling or still but don’t mention the free tap, you gotta do the Oliver Twist on them and ask if they stock the poor people liquid. There’s a lot of good to say. The ambience is lovely, all of the ceramic ware they are serving on is unique and beautiful. Super flowy linen everywhere, and the building by itself is a gem. The taste of the food was nice. Dessert in particular they had some major aesthetics going on as well, not quite like anything I’ve had, kind of like perfect little Michelin dessert bites. They are new and figuring it out
